[mood | peppy]

Yesterday I finished a killer problem set for biochem which I finally turned in around noon. I definitely misjudged the amount of time to do this. :( But at the same time, after I finally finished and turned it in, I felt extremely accomplished. It was really strange because I haven't gotten such a sense of accomplishment before after turning in an assignment, especially not something like a problem set. It only consisted of three questions, but the questions were multi-part. We had to figure out the enzyme mechanism for Mandelate Racemase for question #1... T_T Which took a very long time.
But it occured to me that this is something I really like to do. And while the process is very tiring and frustrating, the immense accomplishment I felt afterwards was really rewarding. :D

I also sat down with my professor afterwards to talk to him about the p-set and see if he meant for this p-set to take so long. (Wednesday night I went met up with 2 ppl to talk about the p-set and we decided to head up to the computer lab in the sci center and there were 7-8 other people from my class also working on the p-set. Thursday night around 7 of us stayed at the computer lab past 1 AM.)

I'm thinking about doing research next year with a professor.. and since I really like my biochem professor (and hey, it is my major) I'm thinking of seeing if I could do research in his group. His topic sounds pretty interesting too.

Chocolate Fountains.. [Feb. 14th, 2006|08:57 pm]
[music |Jo Kwan Woo - sang uh reul sarang han in uh (My Girl OST)]

Wondering about the recent onslaught of chocolate fountains...

But to set the scene: My lab partner and I were setting up some gel motility shift assays as well as a MALDI-TOF mass spec while constantly running up and down floors to research places to buy materials for our project together when...

Onto the plot: We see a gathering of people at Sage Lounge. So being the curious folk that we are, we wonder over to see what might have attracted such a crowd only to learn that there was a fountain of chocolate, overflowing with gorgeous brown gold! So of course we take our place in line..

The conflict: But, oh no! There was no more fruit! No more ripe red strawberries! No more luscious yellow pineapple pieces! Oh my! What to do? Instead we dip some oreos.. (at the other end of Sage Lounge were heart themed brownies and cookies amongst other things..)

* * *

Later on [info]enyi informs me that there was also a chocolate fountain at Davis Museum. Even later on, there's an annoucement stating that there's a chocolate fountain at Freeman (ie, my hall of residence.) So here I am, munching on chocolate covered strawberries.

But still I wonder, what's up with this onslaught of chocolate fountains? Is Wellesley College suddenly celebrating Valentine's Day? x_X

And with that note, Happy Valentine's Day!

<edit>
I just ordered more yarn. Argh. Really ;_; someone stop be before I spend all my money! I haven't even finished my first sweater yet. ;;__;; *whimper* (But it's a really pretty teal tweed... and it was on sale... T_T)

[mood | undecisive]
[music |Rain - Sad Tango]

I want a paid LJ subscription. T_T

But I'm thinking of changing my username to something else.. well rather, creating a new journal. Really should decide so I can get a paid account asap. *_*

What do you guys think of "epoxide" anyways? Haha, yes it's a chem term. I registered it already just in case I want it.

[info]enyi just showed me this.. beware, not for the faint of heart! I was/still am traumatized over it... T_T But that might be because I take it personally since I knit...

A bit of spring cleaning [Feb. 9th, 2006|01:08 pm]
[mood | cheerful]

Been purging my LJ of superfluous posts and angsty depressed stuff that I don't ever want to read again. :D I think this winter I've moved onto a new stage of my life, so it's time to move out all the old junk! I'm only taking three classes this semester and working one day a week, so my schedule is rather lovely. Basically I've only got one class a day (starting either at 9:50 or 11:10am) with the exception of Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday I have my Biochem II lab which is about 12:30-4:00pm and Wednesday I have a seminar class (Bioinformatics) from 6:30-9:00pm.

My biochem class is a continuation of the class last semester, with the same professor. I simply adore Elmore! It's really hard to describe, but just the way he acts and the little side comments he makes, etc etc. It's just terribly amusing to be in a class with him. :3 So yes, I adore this class. Mona, the lab prof is equally nice. She's very easygoing (especially since I showed up at lab one hour late last week..) and let me attending Friday's lab to make up the one I missed. I also had her last semester for Biochem lab.

I'm taking an english class on Milton with a new professor fresh out of Harvard grad school. (She's a Wellesley alum too.) I think this'll be really interesting! I've decided to minor in English so I need three more courses counting this one. For my first essay I'll be writing about food, a topic I really like. *heh heh* :D Actually, I was a bit apprehensive about this class because at first it felt like I was intruding on someone else's territory. I generally know all the people in my sci classes having taken classes with some of them since first semester of my freshman year and I know no one in my English class. That feeling's definitely gotten better now, however I found out through an introduction exercise that the majority of the class is majoring in English and there's only one Eng/Bio major. *coughs*

Bioinformatics is very easy-breezy! It's only once a week and the lectures right now deal with very intro information to bio.. It reminds me of Astro 100. We don't have any exams but several one-week long assignments as well as a final project/paper type thingy.

I'm really glad I have this time off this semester because I'm trying to do decide what I want to do after college and this'll be rather hard. I have to study for the GREs and apply to research internships for the summer. I'm going to try to exercise more and get off campus more, as well as knit more! There, I said it! I won't lie! *coughs*

Speaking of knitting, my room still lingers with the scent of wet wool, a not extremely pleasant smell.. (it's a lot better though than the two days before.) I was blocking three scarves as well as a felted cell-phone pouch. I'm still working on kitchener stitching my two halves of a sweater together. Made a mistake near the beginning and have to take it all out. :( If it wasn't for that mistake which semiprominent in the front, it would have been really great. I think I got this kitchener stitch down.. just have to be careful.. modified the rhyme a bit to help me more: "Knit - slip, purl - hold, purl - slip, knit hold."

Recent things... [Feb. 6th, 2006|07:40 pm]
[mood | geeky]

I got called for Jury Duty. Nevermind that I had just got my US citizenship (in January). Nevermind that I had just turned down Jury Duty a month before. Seriously, this is got to be my third or fourth time being called. And they say it's randomly selected via a computer? Thankfully though, it's during my spring break (so I guess the computer got something right.) However I have to travel to Dedham and I'm really not too sure where it is. Can I reach it via the subway or commuter rail? @_@

I was watching the Superbowl for the first time yesterday (actually for the football!) and ended up cheering for the Steelers, so yayy! I wouldn't say that there were lots of "questionable calls", but things really did go in the favor of the Steelers. I think last night's game was the first time football actually made sense to me and was pretty interesting. Abby was really cute, waving around her yellow "Terrible Towel" whenever the Steelers made a touchdown. :D
Edit: I forgot to mention the reason why I posted about the Superbowl in the first place -- Richard Dean Anderson was in a Macgyver commercial during one of the breaks. AH! I thought it was him but I wasn't too sure but I looked it up and it was!! :D Much <3 to him.
(I also really liked this Budweiser commercial, also watch more Superbowl commercial videos here.)

Thirdly, I'm knitting my first sweater! It's the Leaf Lace Pullover from Loop-D-Loop by Teva Durham. I'm making it in the pattern yarn but in a light orangey-gold color. It reminds me most of the gold used in Harry Potter scarves. Right now, it's coming along swimmingly. I'm really glad I choose this sweater as a "first" because it's knit on size 13's and I've been going along really fast. Case in point, I started knitting last Friday afternoon and I've already done one sleeve and all of the body. The second sleeve is about half-way done. I'm going to wander down to Windsor Button next weekend and pick out a nice brown button or toggle. :D *very excited* I'll post pictures sometime soon!

Jpop boy bands. [Dec. 8th, 2005|12:10 am]
Procrastination always breeds the best entries! Anyways, I've been watching a lot of Japanese dramas recently, as [info]enyi and probably [info]miaowr can contest -- Gokusen, Nobuta wo Produce, Hana Yori Dango, Kiken na Aneki, Densha Otoko, Koi ga Shitai among others. I didn't really pay attention to the male actors (with the exception of Tsumabuki Satoshi & Takenouchi Yutaka). Although after watching Gokusen, I've *really* started to like Matsumoto Jun. Gah, his hair in the drama is SO GOOD. *_* It's kinda silly because I guess I've never really liked male jpop groups (or boy bands of any nationality ^_^;) but then now that I'm watching Nobuta wo Produce with Kame & Yamapi... *squee~*. I've almost turned into fangirl mode. Almost. *_*
I still think it's really amusing to watch them dance ^_^; and their singing still leaves something to be desired.. but it's still entertainment nonetheless! Anyways, whenever I get together with [info]enyi we always discuss dramas. :D

*continues post*

AHaha I couldn't finish it in the first go and then got too lazy to finish it after. ^_^; Anyways, I've now finished watching Nobuta wo Produce & Hana Yori Dango. ;_; How sad, I really loved them both, especially Nobuta. Still fangirly about Yamapi though.. ah, I put a pic of him as Akira on my cell's background, also have a clip of Seishun Amigo there as a ringtone.

Of course, what I should really say is:

Merry ChristmasHanukkahKwanzaa! :D

(in alphabetical order)

Hope you guys had/are having/will have a happy holiday season~

Now back to our scheduled J-dorama rant. *coughs*
Kinda sad that the current drama season has ended, but eagarly await the January season~ I hear Yamapi's acting in a new drama called Actress, with Matsushima Nanako.. I hope I'll find as many good dramas next semester as I do this semester. :3

It's snowing outside! [Dec. 4th, 2005|01:15 pm]
Somehow sitting here watching the snow fall outside my window gives me a nostalgic feeling...! A really calming effect, and makes me forget all my worries. Sometime today (or tomorrow) I want to go outside and play in the snow, like a kid again. A time where I didn't have all these things I have to do. Ah, is it irresponsible to want to be a kid again? I feel like the older you become, the more restraints you have put on you.

Finals are coming soon. With every passing year, it seems time goes by faster and faster... I can't believe the semester is almost over, just 7 more days of class. This year has been different for me. In a way, I've become stronger and I hope that continues.

I just want to wish everyone a happy holiday and good luck on your exams (if you have any!) :)

For some reason, I don't feel as stressed as I usually do before finals. I've mostly managed to stay on top of things and stop procrastinating. Yes! I'll do my best.

In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.
I'm still learning. Maybe I was naive at first, when I said "I just want to be happy!" as what I want in life. But there's nothing wrong with happiness and doing what you can to obtain it. So, do what you want to obtain your own happiness. If you don't, then being happy is not what you truly want.

Sonnet XVII: Love -- Pablo Neruda [Jun. 28th, 2005|12:25 pm]
I don't love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that doesn't bloom and carries
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don't know any other way of loving
but this, in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.
